Society often puts pressure on us to conform to its norms. But is it really worth sacrificing our individuality for conformity?
According to psychologist Stanley Milgram, the answer is no. Milgram conducted a series of experiments in the 1960s that showed that people will go against their own conscience if they believe they are acting under authority. These studies have come to be known as the “obedience experiments.”
In one of Milgram’s experiments, participants were asked to administer electric shocks to another person, who was actually an actor. The participant believed that he or she was causing real pain to the other person. However, the experimenter told the participant to continue administering shocks, even when the other person pleaded for mercy.
Interestingly, 65% of participants continued administering shocks up to the maximum level, even though they were clearly causing the other person a great deal of distress. Milgram’s experiments showed that people will often obey authority figures, even when they are doing something that goes against their own moral code.
So why do we conform to societal norms, even when they may be harmful? One reason is that we want to fit in and be accepted by others. Conformity allows us to do that. It can also be seen as a form of social control – by conforming to norms, we are less likely to break the law or engage in other disruptive behavior.
Of course, there are times when conformity can be a good thing. For example, following traffic laws keeps everyone safe. But we should be careful not to blindly follow societal norms just because they exist. We should question them and decide for ourselves whether they are worth following.
